30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Composition Measurements near the Second Knee with the Telescope Array Low- Energy Extension (TALE)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cosmic rays with energies between 10 and 10 eV exhibit a rich range of features. The energy spectrum changes index at at least two points, known as the “second knee” and the “ankle”. There may be a composition change in this energy regime as well, perhaps indicative of a shift in predominance from galactic to extragalactic sources. The Telescope Array Low-Energy Extension — planned for construction in Millard County, Utah, USA — stands well poised to make decisive simultaneous measurements of cosmic ray energy spectra and composition in this transition region. Here, we present the results of simulation studies relevant to the design of the TALE detectors, and estimate the sensitivity of TALE to composition changes in the 10 eV decade.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Physics of the TALE Experiment
The Telescope Array Low Energy Extension (TALE) is a series of detectors to be added to the Telescope Array (TA) experiment to extend its energy coverage to lower energies and increase its aperture at high energies. The combination of TA and TALE will be able to measure the spectrum of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays from 10 to 10 eV, and study all three features of the spectrum: the second knee, ...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Calibration and monitoring of the air fluorescence detector for the Telescope Array experiment
The air fluorescence detectors (FDs) of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment have been constructed in a dessert of Utah, USA. We can measure the longitudinal developments of EASs directly with the FDs by detecting air fluorescence lights and determine the primary energies of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In order for accurate observation and measurements of EASs, elaborate detector calibrations...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE The First Observation with the Fluorescence Detectors of the Telescope Array Ex- periment
The fluorescence measurement is the key in observations of ultra high energy cosmic rays and in determinations of their primary energies in the TA experiment. Almost all fluorescence detectors of TA is in operation from June 2007. Here, we describe the characteristics of the telescopes and the status of the associated systems, and also present preliminary results from the first observation run ...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE VERITAS: Status and Latest Results
VERITAS is an atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array designed to study astrophysical sources of very-high-energy gamma radiation. Located in southern Arizona, USA, the array consists of four 12 m-diameter imaging Cherenkov telescopes. All four telescopes have been deployed at the basecamp of the Whipple Observatory and began full operation in early 2007. This paper describes the operational stat...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Status of CANGAROO-III
The CANGAROO-III telescope system for very-high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics consists of four 10-m atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located near Woomera, South Australia. The construction of the fourth telescope was completed in summer 2003, and stereoscopic observations have been in progress since March 2004. Here we report on the status of the system and some recent results from CANGAROO-III...
